Capertons in WWI Canadian Expeditionary Force

According to Research in the National Archives of Canada, there was only one Caperton who served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force (C.E.F.) during World War One. His name was William Caperton, born Muskogee Oklahoma on 9 September 1875. He gave his mothers name as Frances Caperton (widow) and he was living at 1216 Freemont St., Muskogee Oklahoma at the time of his enlistment. He gave his occupation as Tailor. the following statistics were recorded at the time of enlistment: William was 5' 10", 158 pounds, Dark complexion, brown eyes and black hair. I have obtained the Service Record of William from the Canadian National Archives but there was not much in the file. The attestation paper, a Medical History (nothing out of the ordinary), a casualty form and several pay sheets.

The summary below is based on these:

William enlisted on 16 October 1916. at Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. William joined regiment 931595 of the #2 Construction Battalion of the (C.E.F.).

On 19 February 1917 he was considered Absent without Leave (AWOL). A court of inquiry was held on 19 March 1917 where he was Struck off Strength and declared a Deserter. Curiously his final documents identify him as DofW in his terms of service. According the the National Archives of Canada, this means Died of Wounds. Being dead would certainly be a valid reason for being AWOL but I would have thought the Court of Inquiry would have figured that one out. Additionally, it looks from his records as though he never left Canada. I believe from the entries that he was stationed at Truro Nova Scotia. The Town of Truro is located in Colchester County, Nova Scotia on the East coast of Canada. Situated near the Atlantic Ocean.

I have been unable to match this William to any of the known William Caperton so if you are related to this person, drop me an email at donald@caperton.info I would gladly swap copies of the military file for info on this family line.
