The Caperton Project

The Caperton Project

The Caperton Project is simply the carrying on of Bernard Caperton's work. In this section is an online version of Bernard Caperton's The Caperton Family, as well as other family histories contributed by Caperton cousins.

I have received permission from Mary Caperton to convert Bernard's book into a database for distribution to others interested in his work. My hope is that others will be able to use this posted data to find where their family links into Bernard's book. Those individuals would then be invited to submit their data for inclusion into a "Master" database. Additional links on this page include the genealogies of families that have already been able to link into the Bernard Caperton book and are willing to have them published here.

This page explains both the format of Bernard Caperton's The Caperton Family History book online and how you can submit your information for inclusion in the project. For information on the way the book was converted to its online format see Online. For instructions on submitting lines see submission guidelines.

Online

Converting Bernard Caperton's The Caperton Family History to an online edition was not as straight forward as first thought. There were numerous instances where I could not simply copy what was in the book into a genealogy program. In the end I developed the set of standards explained here:

Introduction Text, Photos and Drawings

Bernard started each new section with a rather extended history of that particular child of John and Polly Caperton. I have copied that exactly, including any typographical errors. I have not, however, included any of the drawings or photographs from the book at this time.

Henry Numbering System - Though dated, I have preserved the Henry numbering system used by Bernard. I felt it was important that users of the database have a consistent method to communicate with each other. There were several instances however where typographical errors in the book resulted in the incorrect number being assigned. In those instances, I identified the error through a comment made in brackets and my initials have been added to identify it as not a part of the original book.
Typically, when a child died young, Bernard while allocating a henry number for the child, did not explicitly assign the number to that child(ren). More likely he made a comment under the parents name giving the childs name and that it died young. In these cases, I felt it important to actually record the child. Therefore, I asigned the Henry number Bernard had allocated, and made a comment in the childs record of the fact that I, not Bernard, assigned the number.

Parents of spouses - Where Bernard included information about spouses and their siblings in the comment of the Caperton being discussed, I formally recorded the spouses and the siblings so that they could be indexed and searched in the database. The information that pertained the the 'non-Caperton' individuals is recorded where appropriate in their record.

Submission Guidelines

My hope is that everyone who visits the site will learn something about their family that they didn't know before they arrived. Additionally, my hope is that those of you with family information not found on this site will be willing to contribute. To that end I have developed a method whereby you can! Simply email me at donald@caperton.info and attach a gedcom of your Caperton family. In the email, be sure to identify the Caperton you link to (include Henry number if possible). If you would like to email me with questions before sending the gedcom (including, "what the heck is a gedcom?!!"), please feel free to! If you have your information in a different format and want to submit it as a text document, you can do that too! I will then add your information and link it to the Family Project page.

Can I submit Photos?

You sure can! send them as an attachment to an email to donald@caperton.info. Please include as much information about the photos you are sending as you can.
