origins of the Caperton name have been shrouded in mystery since the
early days of the Caperton Genealogy. Various people have explored
these origins with mixed results. Here are summaries of some of this

European Background of John Caperton - By Bernard Caperton
Much speculation has been advanced about the European antecedent of
John Caperton. I have done no original research on this matter, but
feel that I must pass on to the family the information discovered by
others that has recently come to my attention. Adm. Wm. B. Caperton
(E-8531), and Woods A. Caperton (F-71511) of Indianapolis did some

Caperton European Roots - By Robert Canterbury
Evidence indicates John Caperton – American immigrant – came
from Ireland, then Scotland, and a long way back - France. It appears
quite likely that John Caperton was born about 1735 in Kilmorack
parish, Inverness county, Scotland and that his parents were Alexander
Capitan and Isobel McIver, both of the same parish- reference Old
Parish Records of Scotland. His family moved to Ireland shortly after
1748 and John Caperton was in Augusta county Virginia by May 8, 1753...

Caperton’s in Wells Cuthbert, England 1695 - 1734
In searching the Wells St. Cuthbert parish register, the earliest
mention of the Caperton name found was on page 127 where on 11 July
1697 the wife of Thomas Caperton is recorded to have been buried.
The last mention of a Caperton in the parish register was on 6 October
1728 when a Thomas Caperton is recorded as buried .. . continued
